Hectic Knife (Peter Litvin) is a vigilante who has vowed to protect the
streets of his city from all sorts of crime via obscure knife techniques
he learned 25 years ago from an Indian guru (Richie Blackwood). Thing is,
all the vigilantism doesn't make Hectic Knife all that much money, so he
has to accept a roommate, Link (John Munnelly), to help pay his bills, and
then he also suddenly appears to have a girlfriend, Frannie (Georgia Kate
Haege), whom he saved from a thug once and who then moves in with him
without asking - only to eventually starting to empty his money box and
start an affair with Link. Meanwhile, Hectic Knife grows tired of being
a vigilante ... until supervillain Piggly Doctor (J.J. Brine) hits town to
drug our youth to eventually - well, it's not exactly clear how, but he
plays for world domination while turning kids into addicts one at a time.
And after Piggly Doctor kills Hectic Knife's best friend (Rockin Ray),
Hectic Knife knows he has to act, and almost dies in a trap set up by his
nemesis. Thanks to his training back in India he survives the deadly trap
and even grows back his chopped off hand, but before he can finally fight
it out with Piggly Doctor, he has to go down many a dark road, some lined
with pain, others lined with ... do-nuts? On the surface, Hectic
Knife seems to be an irreverent and silly comedy that for that makes a
great party movie, and that's good enough in itself - but on closer
inpsection, it's also the perfect middle finger in the face of superhero
cinema of today (however intentional or unintentional), with its
intentionally muddled plot (even the characters in the movie at times
comment on this), cheesy "origin" story (heck, he's in India, he
has to learn somethiny mystic, right?), totally inexplicable
invulnerability of its key characters whenever the story just needs them
to survive a little longer, the lead villain's utterly ridiculous plans
for world domination, fighting techniques not based on anything even
resembling actual fighting, characters turning evil just to keep the story
moving and the like. Watch pretty much any current superhero movie back to
back with this one, and you'll see the similarities, with a huge gap being
mostly in budget (yup, this one was rather made on the cheap) - but if
you're up for some good, sometimes maybe crude, fun, this one might beat
out the blockbuster nine times out of ten.
