Kendall (Zoe Myers) is - at least in her own eyes - a rising star, with
her first single coming out, and starring in a horror movie. Kendall's
also a total bitch about it, having pretty much bullied another girl out
of the lead role in the flick and now tearing down the script of the film
and being rude to everyone on set from the PA (Brian Schwartz) up. Plus
her newfound "stardom" has gotten her to buy a dreamhouse in one
of the most expensive areas in town, a dreamhouse she can't even afford
yet - but it's her dream and she figures for that reason alone she will
get there ... and at least she's ruthless enough. Kendall has a
housewarming party with her best friends Casey (Sarah E. Spencer),
something like her voice of reason, and Hannah (Shannon Stough), the
perfect partygirl after Kendall's liking, but ultimately, Kendall finds
herself to be forced to spend her first weekend alone in the house, which
tends to turn ... rather spooky at times. Time and again, Kendall's
landlord Sam Belial (Michael Ford) stops by to see if she's alright and to
comfort her when needed, but the more often that happens, the more Kendall
suggests he has his own agenda - and eventually she has to realize she's
caught in a nightmare she has no idea how to get out of ... Sure,
some might be turned off that Hollywood Nightmare in fact is a bit
on the slow-burning side - but that really works for the movie here, as
it's as much character study as it's a horror piece (not that these two
approaches actually contradict one another), and that the lead character
of Kendall has room to breathe and has its own arc really makes the movie
work - also thanks of course to a compelling yet subtle performance by Zoe
Myers, supported by a fine ensemble, and a very relaxed directorial
effort. Perhaps not the wildest ride ever ... but a film that's almost
sure to freak you out eventually!
