Astronaut Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) has the feeling that his genie
Jeannie (Barbara Eden) is helping him too much, so he asks her to not help
him at all anymore - which causes a big dilemma (after all, it's the job
of a genie to help her master) which can only be solved by her swearing a
sacred oath that prevents her from helping Tony altogether ... but as soon
as she has recited the oath, Tony is kidnapped by two Red Chinese (Richard
Loo, James Hong), who want to get some secret plans out of him. Jeannie's
worried sick about this, even more so when she sees the Chinese are
commandeered by a beautiful princess (Linda Ho) who wants to make Tony her
consort. The best thing Jeannie can do though is to tell everything to
Tony's best friend and colleague Major Healey (Bill Daily), who in turn
tells it to NASA psychiatrist Dr Bellows (Hayden Rorke), in hopes he will
help - but Dr Bellows only sees more proof in this that both Tony and
Major Healey are insane. Ultimately, Jeannie finds a solution to her
problem though: Major Healey has to become her new master, so she is freed
of her oath and can help Tony. Weil, it works, even if Major Healey is a
bit disappointed that he has only become her master for the time it took
her to save Tony. Well, at least Tony and Major Healey can play a trick on
Doctor Bellows in the end ... Nice episode that tries out a new
plot device without stretching the formula too far. Now for today's
audience, the depiction of the Chinese might seem a bit, ummm, off colour,
but of course, almost 50 years ago (and in the Cold War, too), political
correctness wasn't that much of an issue. And Barbara Eden and Larry
Hagman are both in top form in this one.
