Tony's (Larry Hagman) to Melissa (Karen Sharpe) is just days away, but
his genie Jeannie (Barbara Eden) disapproves of course, thinking the
woman's not right for him. And now that the date is really that awfully
close, Tony himself starts having doubts, because only now does he realize
how much Melissa tries to control his life: She has changed their
honeymoon destination, wants to force him to quit his job with NASA to
work as a military attaché for her father (Philip Ober), and she has
replaced his witness (Bill Daily) at the wedding with her childhood friend
Grover (John Hudson). It seems though there is no way out for Tony ...
until Jeannie finds out Grover is actually deeply in love with Melissa -
and thus she employs some ghostly voices to make him confess his love to
her. Within minutes, the two of them are a couple. There is still the
issue of telling Tony though - who is hard-pressed not to show his genuine
joy over the good news ... Truth to be told, this is not one of
the better episodes of I Dream of Jeannie, mainly because it
lacks proper build-up: Melissa as a character was absent during the last
two episodes and in this story seems to be pulled out of the hat rather
than anything else, Tony as a character isn't believable as a man that
close to marriage, the resolution of the story is a disappointment more
than anything else, and somehow the whole thing could have done with a few
unexpected plottwists to keep things interesting. That said, Barbara
Eden has some really funny scenes, and Larry Hagman manages to make more
than expected out of his character that's rather muddily drawn in this
one. Still, not one of the better episodes of the series.
