Because astronaut Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) carelessly wishes he could
be a surgeon in front of his genie Jeannie (Barbara Eden), she just makes
him one - and his first assignment is to perform an appendectomy on his
best friend and colleague Roger (Bill Daily) ... who of course totally
freaks out when he learns who's going to operate on him. Not that Tony
wants to operate on him, but now Dr Bellows (Hayden Rorke), who has long
suspected there's something weird about Tony, has caught him pretty much
red-handed and has seen through all the little excuses and big white lies
Tony told him to get off the hook, it's almost inevitable that Tony,
without a hint of expertise, has to perform the operation after all, if
only so Dr Bellows can prove his point to general Peterson (Barton
MacLane). Of course, Jeannie saves the day in the nick of time in her
usual manner. A fun episode, because it's based on a great (and
thus far under-used) premise that offers many unusual twists and turns
(even if the outcome is a tad predictable). And especially Barbara Eden,
whose Jeannie doubles as an over-ambitious hospital nurse in this one, is
in top form.
