Adam (Christian Gehring), a selfish and spoilt brat, invites his best highschool friends (Teo Celigo, Christina Collard, Marcienne Dwyer, Katelynn Derengowski, Rocco Nugent, Mark Jacobson) to Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula's original castle in Romania for a week of fun, making all sorts of false promises only to get them there, as he was lured there by a weird dream. Of course, the castle is spooky, there is no electricity or many creature comforts, and the host Veronica (Diana Busuioc) might be more than a bit on the eerie side - but on the other hand, she's also a very sensual woman and the food's alright, so ... Oh, and her creepy stories about the historical Vlad the Impaler and how he made a pact with the devil do wonders for the atmosphere. Now sure, some of our kids get freaked out by all of this a bit, but Adam seizes the opportunity to bang his best pal's (Rocco Nugent) girl (Katelynn Derengowski), even if his own girlfriend (Christina Collard) gets scared out by some ghosts or whatever only a few doors down.

Problems really start though when two of the group (Rocco Nugent, Mark Jacobson) are killed by who- or whatever and the attempts of the others to get away only end in running in circles for a whole day. Now one by one, our heroes die, and their deaths frequently mirror their biggest faults in life - but two of them, Dominic (Teo Celigo) and Chelsea (Marcienne Dwyer) are different, as they want to stay virginal until they're married. Problem then that Dominic just might be Vlad reborn and thus part of the problem more than part of the solution ...

Starting out as a typical teen slasher, if a very atmospheric one with great sets/locations, The Impaler gains in depth the longer it runs, playing a very original variation on the Dracula-theme by highlighting the Satanist rather than the vampiric aspects of the story. Now add to that plenty of suspense, shocks and violence and a general sense of creepiness, and you've got yourself a pretty good genre movie.

Recommended.
