On his everlasting quest to find someone to cure his condition -
that is turning into a green giant called The Hulk (Lou Ferrigno) every
time he gets angry -, Doc David Banner (Bill Bixby) has come to Hawaii, to
consult Doc Caroline Fields (Mariette Hartley), a psychiatrist using
hypnosis in her therapy.
But Doc Fields has problems of her own, suffering from a terminal
disease that causes epillepsy like fits. But since Banner is an expert on
genetics, he might be the only one to help her - & soon the 2 are
trying to help each other best they can ... and eventually they ffall in
love. Even Banner's Hulk-problem seems to get better ...
But then Caroline learns she has only 2 more weeks to live, & at
first she visits a cheap bar, has shots on end & has herself picked up
by one sleazy Brad (Brian Cutler). Eventually, Banner stops by Brad's to
pick up Caroline ... But sleazy Brad has no intentions to give his girl
for the night away jut like that, & puts up a fight- not knowing of
course that Banner will eventually turn into the Hulk & thrash his
house ... which he does.
Eventually, Banner proposes to Caroline, & of course she says yes
& the 2 get married. But one night, having a bad dream, Banner turns
into his green self once again ... & Caroline takes a skion sample
from him, to isolate its specific genetic structure, as it might help her
fight her disease. & wouldn'T you know it, Banner thinks it's a good
idea.
But when they head for the clinic to make a serum for her, a hurricane
hits Hawaii, & Caroline has another fit (her last one), jumps out the
car & runs through the streets. Distresed, Banner turns into the Hulk
once again, but even a superpowered being can now save her no more, &
when Banner/Hulk catches up with Caroline, she is already in her last
breaths.
Heartbroken once again, Banner continues his long quest for a cure.
The Bride of the Incredible Hulk is less of a monster story but
more of a tear-jerker right in the mold of Love Story, but with a
monster tagged on. Now am I the only one to say this combination is doomed
to fail ?
In fact the story is incredibly cheesy (& the series as such tended
to be cheesy anyways), and I didn't even mention yet that there is a cute
kid (Meeno Peluce), a sort of subtstitute son for Banner & Caroline,
thrown into the mix for no narrative reason. Suspense is almost absent
from this entry into the series, & the Hulk-scenes, always a climax,
are few & far between - only the scene whrere the Hulk thrashes sleazy
Brad's house is really fun, the rest is just a big disappointment.
