It's 1916, and in the USA, women are still denied the right to vote -
but the Suffragist movement is demanding just that louder and louder. Inez
Milholland (Amy Walker) has over the years become one of the faces
of the movement, and she's just about to make one of her most important
speeches at a rallye in Los Angeles, only weeks before the presidential
election, a speech that addressed sitting (and subsequently re-elected)
President Woodrow Wilson very directly. However, just before her speech
she has a dizzy spell, and a hastily brought in physician, Doctor Campbell
(Travis Joe Dixon), diagnoses her with pernicious anaemia, and urges her
to refrain from making her speech. But it is not only her own conviction,
but also the doctor's inability to understand the importance of their
cause that give her the strength to make that very compelling speech -
that should turn out to be Inez's very last ... Now I will not
lie, I knew nothing about the historical background of this film prior to
watching it - and it's very much to the film's credit that one doesn't
need to, as it manages to within no more than 12 minutes not only give one
the necessary context but also a rounded characterization of Inez
Mulholland herself and her mission - while telling its well-structured
story -, thanks of course to a clever script but also a dynamic
directorial effort that uses cinematic language to help further the plot
rather than just follow the spoken word, and of course thanks to very
solid performances by all involved, to make this a really moving short.
