A certain Mr Gardner is killed on the steamer Intruder, & detective
Samson (William B.Davidson) has just enough time to identify the victim as an
international jewel thief & collect a cast of suspects, before the ship
hits a rock & starts to sink ... The suspects - Gardner's valet (Sidney
Bracy), Mr Wayne (Wilfred Lucas) who was blackmailed by Gardner, Wayne's
daughter Connie (Lila Lee), his drunkard son Reggie (Arthur Housman), Brandt
(Monte Blue), who had been in a rowe with Gardner, seductive blonde Daisy (Gwen
Lee) & small time crook Cramer (Harry Cording) - are forced by Samson at
gunpoint to join him plus the captain (Allen Cavan) & first mate Hanson
(Jack Beek) in a lifeboat, & soon they reach a desert island, complete with
jungle, gorillas & a savage man (Mischa Auer). On the island, Brandt is
identified as the killer by Samson, as some diamonds stolen by Gardner were
found in his cabin, but after he has heroically saved Reggie just minutes
before, his guilt seems highly unlikely at least for the audience. &
indeed, soon Cramer proves to be the real crook, as he shoots the captain &
takes Connie & Daisy hostage. The girls eventually escape, only to hide in
the savage man's cave, who lives there with his skeleton's Mary & Jo (&
sometimes likes to stab the Jo-skeleton), & who scares the heebie-geebies
out of Copnnie & Daisy, Connie is so scared actually that she flees
the cave but is shot down (but not killed) by Cramer. Fortunately by now
Samson, first mate Hanson, the now proven innocent Brandt & the rest of the
gang have taken up pursuit & come to the help of the girls, with Samson
shooting down Cramer, & the rest finally quieting down the savage. Soon a
French steamer picks up all the castaways, plus our savage friend & his
Mary-skeleton (which he takes with him to the sundeck), & only on the ship
can Brandt unmask Samson, who isn't a detective at all but an impostor, as the
actual killer of Gardner, & cramer was only his partner in crime whom
Samson had to eventually shoot on the island to not be found out. An
obviously cheaply made, wild blend of murder mystery, desert island story &
jungle adventure (replete with gorillas & a savage man), with hardly enough
budget to bring all these elements together - which is of course part of the
film's charm.
