Quarreling couple Norman (Corveth Ousterhouse) and Leila (Shirley
Bonne) get lost on a tour through the countryside, and when they run out
of gas, they are lucky to make it to the hut of Greely (Bill Thurman), a
snake collector who claims a gas truck will come the next day, and offers
them his hospitality in the meantime ... of course not mentioning that his
hospitality means locking them up in a cave with paleontologist Wayne
Thomas (Tommy Kirk) ... but there's something else in that cave too -
something else that turns out to be some man-eating reptile that should
have died out millions of years ago ... but is still down there in need
for food. And since the reptile is Greely's favourite pet, he sees to it
that the creature gets food. Greely, you have to know, is a mad killer
who feeds his favourite pet humans on a regular basis - with the exception
of women he likes, like Bella (Annabelle Weenick), whom he keeps as
companions, until a prettier comes along ... and he would really like to
replace Bella with Sheila. When Sheila refuses though, Bella figures it
might be a good idea to help the captives ... Norman and Wayne soon get
into fights over pretty much everything, which eventually only ends when
Norman wants to prove himself more daring than he should be ... and thus
he ends up as reptile food ... Bella eventually gives Wayne and Sheila
some dynamite to blow down the gate to their cage - but by that time,
Greely has drugged their coffee, and they fall asleep before they can use
the explosives ... and while they are out, Greely snatches Sheila away to
make her his. However, Bella wakes up Wayne just in time for the grand
finale, in which Wayne is able to save Sheila, while Bella is shot, but
only after she has lit the dynamite that blows up the creature, right
after it has killed its master Greely. A silly story brought to
the screen remarkably free of atmosphere, suspense and tension, supported
by performances ranging from the bad to the ham, and special effects
obviously done on a shoestring ... in other words, this is a bad movie,
yes, but definitely of the so-bad-it's-good variety - and with a sixpack
at hand, this should be lots of fun.
