Only the other day, record producer Raymond (Goran Visnjic) was
partying, boozing and doing drugs with the best of them, and today he
wakes up with not only a hangover but also in prison with a murder rap
looming over his head. And it's not just any prison either, it's the K-11
ward of the LA County Jail, where out of habit the homosexuals and
transsexuals are kept - now Raymond is neither, but now he is forced to
understand this world while trying to shake his hangover and cold turkey
so he can get in touch with the outer world - but that's much easier said
than done, since a transgender queen bitch called Mousey (Kate del
Castillo) rules the cellblock, a perverted warden called Johnson (D.B.
Sweeney) tries to play the inmates against one another and keeps them in
check by controlling the drug-traffic into the ward, and then there's
Detroit (Tommy 'Tiny' Lister), a massive child molester whom everybody
fears, who has made it his habit to rape girllike transsexual Butterfly
(Portia Doubleday), Raymond's only real friend, whenever he feels like it
- and there's nothing anyone dares to do. It's only eventually that
Raymond develops a plan that should make everybody happy and punish all
the baddies - but it's not only at great personal risk for himself and his
pride but also those around him - so will he go through with the plan, and
which end will he come out of? One would think that by 2012,
everything that could have been said has been said in the storywise rather
restricted prison genre - but at least in mainstream cinema, so far
transsexuals have mostly been kept out of the equation, and homosexuals it
seems were most often in these movies just to fill a quota ... and apart
from a few scenes (like a narratively unnecessary spontaneous fashion
show), first-time director Jules Stewart handles these topics with the
necessary restraint and completely without the histerics that Hollywood
usually attributes to homo- and transsexuals (apart from maybe the campy
outfits Mousey wears, but they give the film a rather enjoyable ironic
note). That said, the film isn't perfect, the narrative structure is
somewhat lacking and some of the characters come off as a bit too blunt,
but as a whole, the movie tells a very original story in an
all-too-familiar setting (familiar from the movies rather than from real
life - I hope) - which is more than enough reason to watch it I suppose.
