Uncle Bill (Jack Baxley) makes a bet with Morgan (Stephen Keyes) that his
men will beat Morgan's men in the upcoming rodeo ... & the wager is 500
pieces of the finest cattle. The only problem is though that Unlce Bill's men
don't stand a chance against Morgan's men. So it seems a piece of good luck
that famous cowboy star Spade Cooley stops by, & he agrees to take part in
the rodeo ... mainly because he has set his sight on Bill's niece Peggy (Wanda
Cantlon) ... only problem is, Spade Cooley can neither ride nor rope cattle nor
any other rodeo stuff, or indeed any other cowboy stuff at all, my he even
mouths the song in his pictures to records of someone else singing ... all is
done by various doubles, most prominently his sidekick Walt (Bob Gilbert), whom
he brought with him. And Walt is desperate to step out of Spade's shadow, so he
throws in with Morgan's gang, & he even gives them some pointers on how to
chase Cooley off ... but by mere chance, Cooley manages to beat up all of
Morgan's men who attack him, & do some fancy riding too even if he claims
he's afraid of horses. On the day of the rodeo, Morgan's men panic & take
Peggy hostage to keep Spade from participating in the rodeo, but he is suddenly
a great cowboy, frees Peggy, wins the rodeo & has Morgan's men arrested, no
explanation given why he's suddenly doing so great ... This film
could have been an ironic take on B-Western heroes of its time ... but a boring
direction, uniformly wooden performances & a muddled script full of bad
storytelling rpetty much derive the basic plot of all its opportunities, making
this an utterly forgettable piece of Western cinema. This is one of the very
few Westerns that features the popular Westernswing bandleader Spade Cooley in
the lead (the others are Silver Bandit and
Border Outlaws). In 1961 Cooley would gain a very different kind of
notoriety when he killed his wife in front of his 14-year old daughter.
