The "Mistress" (Silvia Sorrentino) has a disturbing hobby -
to brutally torture and ultimately kill young women, basically because
from birth on, she was deprived of any and all feelings of pain - and she
really tried to feel it, thus her body is riddled by scars. And also, the
Mistress could never feel any (physical) pleasure. So when she does all
those horrible things to all those lovely girls, she's only living out
what she's been deprived of. But of late, something has gone awry, that
Japanese girl (Reiko Nagoshi) she and her right hand man (Paolo Salvadeo)
had tortured to death only recently, she had repercussions on them. At
first, it's only the Mistress's helper who isn't too much into torturing
anymore, having visions of the girl, but then the Mistress herself is
starting to have nightmares - that become reality all too soon ... Kokeshi
is one mindfuck of a movie: It doesn't really spend much time with a
set-up, doesn't feature all that much of a structure, it just throws its
viewer into a nightmare there is no escaping from till the end. That's not
to say the whole thing is a story-free shock-fest because it isn't, but
the narrative elements definitely take backseat to all the disturbing
images that find the right balance between pure atmorphere and gross-out
violence. All that said, it's definitely not a film for everyone, but
horror fans from the gorier side of the spectrum are sure to love this!
