London Bridge is the oldest bridge of London - though arguably so,
while the original London Bridge was possibly constructed when the town
was still part of the Roman Empire, and its first enduring incarnation was
built in 1209, it was re-built in 1831, constructed by established
civil engineer John Rennie. But by the 1960s, with a decision of the City
of London Council to make the city more car-friendly (then a good thing),
it was decided to rebuild the bridge from scrap. But what to do with the
old bridge then? One City of London Council member, Ivan Luckin, had the
idea to instead of just scrapping it, why not sell it to a rich American,
in this case oil and chainsaw entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch, who
rebuilt the bridge over Lake Havasu to link Lake Havasu City to the
mainland. The rebuilt bridge soon became a tourist attraction, according
to many reports the second biggest in Arizona after the Grand Canyon - but
rumours persist that Robert P. McCulloch was conned into the purchase by
the old misconception that "London Bridge" is actually the name
of the much more pittoresque Tower Bridge. Now with most of the
protagonists of this story long deceased, everything's open to
speculation, but journalist Travis Elborough has set out to get as close
to the truth as humanly possible ... Now I am certainly not a
specialist when it comes to London history, and despite actually having
seen the David Hasselhoff vehicle Terror
at London Bridge, which is mentioned in this movie, the subject
matter of this documentary sounds about wild enough I had to look up the
facts to make sure this isn't a hoax - it isn't I've since found out. And
this is really one of the strong selling points of London Bridge is
Falling Down - Built It Up Again!, that it very self confidently tells
its for many obscure story in a very entertaining way, hitting upon many a
fun fact and keeping things light.hearted without dumbing anything down.
And I have to admit, this film is much more enjoyable than I expected it
to be.
