Basically a collection of real life stunts and pranks done by James
Johnson and Addison Binek and a host of friends throughout (roughly) the
2000s and early 2010s committed to video on various formats. Now
I have to admit, I have never been a fan of the real life stunt and prank
genre - after all, it wasn't by mistake that avoided watching Jackass
like the plague. So the humour of this movie, which was almost certainly
inspired by said show (heck, even the poster suggests as much), somewhat
eludes me. What's very endearing about Magnum Opus: The MOVie
though is that beneath it all, it's a celebration of youth, of growing up,
when you're still allowed to be silly, don't always think that actions can
have consequences, when the body's still strong enough to take the
occasional punch and not every little injury lands one in hospital, and
when one's still curious enough to experiment, even if that experiment
doesn't seem incredibly clever. And there's indeed not much cleverness in
this movie (and was probably never intended to be) but a high degree of
honesty, and a certain innocence towards it all, which makes the film a
cool document of days gone by which most will be able to relate to, even
if maybe not with the stunts and pranks as such.
