In school, 14 year old Missy (Juliette Greenfield) claims she's fine, and
even her best friend Kayla (Sami Walker) she tells everything's ok - onl.y
why is she so hesitant to enter her own home? Her tyrranical mother
Annette (Kate Logan) might have something to do with it, for whom nothing
Missy does is ever good enough - and that's rich coming from a heroin
addict. Now mom alone would be bad enough, but her boyfriend Trent (Andy
Sparnon) is even worse, a lowlife drug pusher who has been released from
jail only recently, who readily supports Annette's drug habit, and who has
sexually abused Missy in the past - without Annette even lifting a finger
to help the girl - quite the contrary actually, she grows quite jealous
towards her daughter. So these days, Missy takes a big knife to bed with
her, should she need to defend herself. And indeed, tonight Trent pays her
a visit with unmistakable intentions, and of course he won't take no for
an answer - so ultimately she has no choice but to stab him dead in self
defense. Thing is, Annette, drugged up to the brim, doesn't take too
kindly to this - to the point where she actually wants to avenge her dead
lover. Missy locks herself just in time to lock herself in, and she calls
the police not one moment too soon, as pretty much as soon as she has
reported her mother's intention, her mother breaks down the door. Missy is
changed around the house, and in one of her hiding places actually
stumbles upon the corpse of her grandmother (Claire Weller Price),
obviously killed by her mother who has always claimed she's on a trip
abroad. Missy holds out until two police officers (Riley Channells,
William Tarrant) arrive. Thing is, Annette is in such a state not even the
police are safe ... Now make no mistake, The Matriarch
is a pretty relentless film, shocking for its subject matter already,
which is of course only sustained as it's really well-made - it's pretty
much one solid suspense piece with the tension never letting off and all
the violence and jump scares in all the right places. And both Juliette
Greenfield and Kate Logan really carry the film, both giving strong
performances. That said, this is definitely not a film for the
faint-hearted, not only but also due to its disturbing premise, but if
you're up for a merciless thrill-a-minute tour de force, then this one's
definitely for you.
