Now: The virus F214 has just hit the UK, and the gouvernment is doing
everything to keep it from spreading, even if many of the measures are as
desparate as they're futile. Megan (Carley Motley) asks her boyfriend
Callum (Dean Sills) to kill her should she catch the virus, but her
refuses to make such morbid a promise, upon which she leaves in anger.
Only minutes later, Callum refuses news that his area will be bombed in an
effort to control the virus, and he's removed from his home by force,
without any chance to catch up and make up with Megan to take her with him
to safety. 5 years in the future: The UK's in ruins now, and despite all
efforts the virus couldn't be controlled let alone contained. Lonesome
Callum, one of the "lucky" ones who haven't caught the virus
(yet) is walking the countryside to look for Megan, from whom he didn't
receive word since she walked out on him all these years back. But Callum
better be careful what he's wishing for ... One might call
Megan a "zombie film without zombies" (© Dean Sills) as
despite it playing with genre tropes, it never shows any actual zombies
and remains intentionally vague about the threat of the F214 virus to
begin with, using it as a metaphor rather than something tangible,
concentrating on the emotional side of its story instead and relying on
mood instead of action to bring the narrative across - and it works rather
beautifully, thanks to strong performances and a restrained yet powerful
directorial effort
