A filmcrew is shooting the indie monster movie Monsters in the Woods
in the - where else? - woods. So meet the self centered director Jayson
(Glenn Plummer), the frustrated actor Burt (Edward Hendershott), Burt's
girlfriend Ashley (Linda Bella), who's promised a part even though she
can't act worth shit, actress Suzy (Jacqui Holland), who was hired mainly
because she does nudity, but whose ego doesn't do her any good, hapless
executive producer Bravo (Blaine Cade), stuttering soundguy Guy (Lee
Perkins), and the typical crew who during this particular shoot finally
regret ever having been bitten by the film bug ... but they are in the
middle of the woods, so to just pack one's things and leave is not an
option. This is of course too bad for our little film crew, as there are
real monsters in the woods - hellhounds, actually -, as Burt has to find
out before too long, and he only just escapes being killed thanks to a
couple of monster hunters (Claudia Perea, Curt Mega) who just happen to be
in the area. But if you think this is fortunate for our film crew, think
again, since these monster hunters are pretty ineffective, and while the
male part of the crew dies within minutes, his colleague Ariel in her sexy
dress doesn't even seem to be dressed for the job, and despite Burt
ultimately saving her ass more than once, she always fails to return the
favour. And while Burt fights his way through to save his girl Ashley, how
Ariel even makes it to the film crew is at anybody's guess. But filming
hasn't gone without a hitch since: Someone has killed Jayson, and while
nobody really liked the guy one bit, everybody is a bit surprised when
producer Bravo insists on finishing the movie anyways. But during the last
scene, the monsters strike - and it's found out that Ariel hasn't just
come to save the bunch but has an agenda all of her own ... but in that
she isn't the only one ... More than anything else, Monsters
in the Woods is just really good fun - I mean it, this movie is
(intentionally) hilarious, taking the viewer from one great scene of
situation comedy to the next, while at the same time never neglecting its
monster and gore movie audience: Despite everything, this film has plenty
of gore and violence, the action is well-staged, the movie is tensely
paced, and it has its fair share of suspense ... it's just littered with
many an in-joke, oneliner, slapstick scene and whatnot to go far beyond
your typical genre fare - and it's good at its comedy though, rather than
just inserting fart jokes to relieve tensions, most of the fun is topical
and carries the story, and the cast seems to be in on the joke rather than
just playing it for laughs. True, low budget it might be ... but high on
humour!
