Borden T. Pike (Richard Deacon) is tasked by the Mayor (Henry Hunter)
with installing a new pipeline that will provide a whole neighbourhood
with gas. Thing is, the pipeline would lead right through under the
Munsters' house, and the workmen digging the line accidently break the
wall to the Munsters' basement - and make a hasty escape when they see
Herman (Fred Gwynne) and Grandpa (Al Lewis). It's now up to Pike to broker
a deal with the Munsters, and while Herman's more than willing to accept
Pike's generous offer, it's Grandpa's shenanigans that scare Pike away.
Herman sends over niece Marilyn (Beverly Owen) to ask Pike back to the
negotiating table, but Pike's jealous wife (Jane Withers) thinks she's
Pike's affair. Ultimately then, it's Herman scaring the living daylight
out of Pike's wife that does the trick ... Now on a pure story
level, this isn't an especially interesting episode - safe from the fact
perhaps that this time around Herman has to scare someone to make things
right again -, but as with much of the series, it's not so much the story
that makes the show but the main characters and their interactions, and
they're all really funny and have great chemistry in this one, and it's
also nice in this one to see Herman's caring side, to see him wanting to
do right, if with varying degrees of success. Still, not one of the better
episodes - but fun nevertheless.
