Ana (Vanessa Donley) is a lovely girl, really, cute in an innocent way,
with a certain vulnerable aura about her ... which makes photographer Max
(Jesse Mueller) want to take pictures of her, to which she agrees. But Ana
is also autistic, and thus a bit on the helpless side when it comes to
expressing herself - which Max takes advantage of and rapes her right
after the shoot. Her father (Dan Higgins) finds out though, and in a fit
of rage, he stabs Max to death - which really doesn't solve anything ... Mute
is actually a really touching film about rape and revenge, as it manages
to get into its characters heads, make them tangible (even if the lead is
autistic) and presents the story as much more than action and reaction, by
masterfully using basic yet effective techniques like non-linear
storytelling, rhythmical shift of focus, an often haunting musical score
and the like, and a very competent cast of course. Quite haunting ...
but really worth your time nevertheless. And if this has gotten
you at all excited, you can watch the movie here:
