Abigail accepts a job as secretary with ultra-powerful billionaire Mark
Water, who feels immediately drawn to her, and she does her best to resist
his charms - because you see, she's there undercover, researching Mark's
sex life for a tell-all book. And soon enough, Abigail finds out about a
whole binder of Mark's exes, one she has easy access too, and ... all of
them don't make a good story, as the one ex missing from the files is his
very first girlfriend, the woman who shaped him. And this leads Abigail
back to this vintage TV show about a superhero called the Eagle that Mark
obsessively watch, and that her publisher Regis, she soon learns, had a
role as a sidekick in. And the Eagle's female sidekick Sammi seems to be
the key to Mark's sex life, and tracking her down would mean solving the
riddle. That said, the series has eerie parallels to the real world, as
when the Eagle's supercomputer dies down on TV, Mark's superchip that
controls everything is stolen, and without it everything will collapse
before too long. Now that's a bit troubling, but what's even more
unsettling it that the series about the Eagle is apparently based on real
life and on actual superheroes, and Mark's life seems to be interlinked
with these characters in unexpected ways ...
Now one thing up front, this film's visuals and music were entirely
created by AI (not so the script though), and to make full use of the
technology, director Hooroo Jackson, a pioneer when it comes to AI-created
feature films, lets one choose the appearance of the film's protagonist.
This of course is a mere gimmick and has little to do with the quality of
the actual movie - and on that front, My Boyfriend is a
Superhero!? has plenty to offer, actually, it's part romantic
comedy, part techno thriller, and part superhero feature, with the tongue
always in cheek, best evidenced in the clips from the old superhero TV
show that pop up in the film throughout like a weird Greek chorus. And
even though the plot isn't always the easiest to follow, the resulting
wilm is just lots of fun, thanks not only to a clever and engaging story
but also striking visuals and a certain no-holds-barred attitude to
things.
