Belinda's (Ferryl Christina Lawson) ife objectively couldn't be better,
she's married to her high school sweetheart, Quincy (Devin Laster) who's a
doctor, she has a good job working remotely at a law firm, the two of them
have a nice home in the suburbs, and the only thing that stands between
them and utter bliss is not having a child. But they're still young and
are trying ... or at least, they have agreed to try, only of late Quincy
seems to have lost all interest in her. This is naturally, this frustrates
Belinda, so much so that she suspects him of having an affair - though
there's literally no actual indication of that. Enter carpte cleaner
Cordell (Rowe), whose services Belinda requires one day - and he's pretty
good-looking, about Belinda's age, and the two get along nicely - and in a
moment of weakness a few days later, Belinda calls him over for sex. Now
he's without attachment, so he has no reason not to come, but he makes it
clear to her that he wants to be more than just her boytoy. And this is
where it gets tricky, because the very evening of Belinda cheating on him,
Quincy comes home a changed man and acts so frisky guilt-ridden Belinda
feels overwhelmed. Obviously though, Belinda has no more need for Cordell
now that her husband finally fulfills her sexual needs, but he's not one
to just give up on her. And then Belinda does get pregnant, and while
Belinda is sure it's Quincy's she can't be sure. And Cordell is more than
willing to accept the responsibility even. Thing is, when she finally
tells Quincy about her pregnancy, his reaction is not quite what she has
expected ...
Now if above synopsis made you believe A Neglected Wife
is either a conjugal drama or a steamy erotic thriller, you'll probably be
disappointed even if the film is a bit of both. But above all else, this
is a character piece that borrows elements from all quarters (including
romantic comedy even) to build everything into something original, and
that culminates in a very unexpected finale triggered by a major
plottwist. And a very competent and relatable small ensemble sure helps
bringing this clever story to life to make it into a pretty worthwhile
movie.
