Ancient Rome: Julius Caesar (Jay Edwards) has grown tired of Roman
women, so he sends Marc Antony (Johnny Rocco), the greatest lover of
Rome, to Egypt to fetch him Cleopatra (Sonora) ... thing is, Marc
Antony falls for Cleopatra, and she for him, and instead of bringing her
to Rome, they spend night after night after night together.
Then though, Marc Antony is ordered back to Rome because his family
tried to assassinate Caesar. Cleopatra doesn't want to be without her
lover, so she goes after him in disguise, and spends a night of sin with
Caesar, just to help Marc Antony. Thing is, Marc Antony can't see how this
will help him (and neither can the audience) and has Cleopatra thrown into
his own private dungeon out of jealousy, from where she can only escape
thanks to her favourite blonde slave (Dixie Donovan).
In the meantime, Marc Antony has conspired with the senators to kill
Caesar in Senat, but once they have succeeded in doing so, the others make
Marc Antony their scapegoat, and he flees to Egypt and into the arms of
Cleopatra, who's still in love with him.
The Roman army howeve is in hot pursuit of Marc Antony, and before
long, Marc Antony's men decide to not only beat it but also loot
Cleopatra's palace ... and one of them (Mason Bakman) decides it would
also be a good idea to rape Cleopatra. When Marc Antony sees his trusted
man shagging Cleopatra, he totally misjudges the situation and stabs
Cleopatra to death in a fit of jealousy. And when the Roman army has
cornered him soon afterwards, he commits suicide ...
Basically, the whole plot of this film is just an excuse to show naked
(female) skin, and much of it, too - in which the film succeeds.
Ultimately though, The Notorious Cleopatra is a pretty standard
softsex film from the late 1960's, and while it's pretty ok as such, it
also doesn't have all that much going for it, actually. Standard fare,
really.
