The Old West: After her sister Abigale (Lauren Compton) has been
abducted by Swearengen's (Michael Paré) men to be turned into a
prostitute in Deadwood, Ursula (Karin Brauns) tries to persuade the
Colonel (Robert Bronzi), a former army man turned notorious gunslinger,
into helping her freeing Abigale - but the Colonel turns her down as he's
desparately trying to live a peaceful life. So she administers him a
poison that will kill him within three days, promising him her sister
holds the antidote. Now the Colonel basically has to come. On the way to
Deadwood though, the two get into an ambush where a trio of outlaws try to
rape Ursula while the Colonel suffers from stomach cramps, a side effect
from the poison. Our heroes still hold their own, but one of the outlaws
gets away with their horses. Deadwood's only a few days on foot away now,
but in a few days the Colonel is definitely going to be a goner, so the
situation's quite hopeless. But Ursula will stop at nothing to free her
sister ... In a very positive way, Once Upon a Time in
Deadwood is a very old-fashioned western - but not in a way that feels
in the least bit antiquated, but in a way that it concentrates on action
and storytelling rather than post-modern shenanigans or revisionist
reinterpretations. Sure, the story might be somewhat simplistic and very
straight-forward, but it does have emotional depth and is more than just a
hanger for the rather tense shoot-outs. The direction is elegant and
really gets the most out of the modest budget, and the cast is really
solid, with Robert Bronzi having his Charles Bronson act down to the t
without ever taking it too far or drifting off into parody. If you're at
all into westerns, then this one's definitely for you.
