Brothers Treacy (Daniel Timothy Treacy) and Noah (Brian Sutherland)
want to spend a weekend in their parents' cabin in the country for old
time's sake - and to bury their dog. But then they find a dead body in the
hot tub and a girl, Emily (Meagan Karimi-Naser) having taken up one of
their rooms. Turns out she's a bit of a serial killer - which isn't too
bad, as they are something like serial killers themselves, and even though
Emily gets on their nerves at first, they decide to let her stay as long
as she promised to not try to kill them - and they promise the same in
return. Of course, not killing does not go for other people, which they
either bury in their vast garden or leave at their favourite bar where the
barkeeper takes care of the bodies - whatever "taking care"
means, really. But between all the killings, the two brothers start to
work through issues, as Noah learns from his wife (Evelyn Gail) that she's
pregnant over the phone, and Treacy, who's emotionally somewhat deprived,
shows hints of jealousy, and Emily proves to be a catalyst for all their
feelings. But in between killing and soul-baring, it seems to be only a
question of time before somebody snaps ... Mark Patton plays Treacy and
Noah's loving but distant uncle. It's rather safe to say that
you probably have never seen something like 1 Dead Dog as it
light-footedly crosses psychological drama with serial killer movie with
dark comedy, and does so in a way that at pretty much all times the
unexpected happens, and yet the film never just goes over the top but
sticks with its three main characters who might be weird as can be but
also very consistent in their actions and reactions and are allowed to
grow. And while the actors seem to clearly be in on the joke, their
performances are straight and very down-to-earth, while the direction
gives them enough time to breath - making this a very unusual genre trip.
