One stormy night: Old Jasper Whyte (Charley Grapewin) promises each of
his gathered money-grabbing relatives, his lawyer Felix (Clarence Wilson)
and his doctor Denham (Lucien Littlefield) one million Dollars - unless
Doris, his long lost granddaughter should show up ... and right on cue,
his granddaughter does show up (and is played by Evalynn Knapp), and
Jasper is overcome with joy, while his relatives are rather less than
happy about the unexpected guest. Then though, a second Doris shows up
(this one played by Mary Carlisle), along with her vaudeville magician
friend Joe (Wallace Ford), and the first one is murdered. Jaspeer soon
comes to the conclusion that Doris number two is the real McCoy, but then
who brought in Doris number one, and who has murdered her: Playboy Tom
(Regis toomey), who shows a bit too much interest in the new Doris?
Unsuccessful businessman Arthur (Arthur Hohl) and his wife Laura (Hedda
Hopper)? Creepy maid Elvira (Rafaela Ottiano)? Doc Denham who is known to
unsuccessfully bet on horses? Or even lawyer Felix, who after all
introduced the fake Doris to the family? After much to and fro and the
introduction of a masked maniac into the plot, it positively looks as if
likeable Tom is indeed the killer ... until he unmasks Doc Denham as the
killer and explains he has only acted so suspiciously to lure him into a
trap. And as a thank you Tom gets Doris - the real, live one. A
murder mystery of the old dark house variety that has little new to offer
to the (sub-)genre - but is incredibly entertaining nevertheless, thanks
to a fine cast, a witty script and a tongue-in-cheek approach to its
interchangeable basic plotline. Now admittedly, the film is no classic,
but if you're looking for old-fashioned but very entertaining genre fair,
this is the film to watch.
