The future: Mankind has realized there is not enough space for everyone
on earth, so a survey team is sent to Annex One, an earthlike planet with
the difference that there is no night.
Two years later, psychiatrist Dr Marshall (Larry Pennell) is sent up to
Annex One to investigate some irregular activities of the survey team, and
he finds out that their commander Griff (Richard Derr) has died some time
ago while the others are controlled by Reese Fowler (Warren Oates), who
has been one day left out in the (acid) rain too long and has thus turned
into a mutant who can read minds and kill by mere touch - and while
Marshall's still there, Fowler happily kills off the members of the team,
until only three are left, Marshall, Doc Riner (Walter Burke) and Julia
(Betsy Jones-Moreland), who is actually Marshall's former sweetheart.
Somehow the three of them come up with the idea to give Marshall all
the information he needs about Fowler, then hypnotize him so he forgets
everything, but his memory can be brought back if anyone mentions Fowler's
first name Reese - which his superiors on earth will certainly do ...
The silly plan goes horribly wrong when Doc Riner keeps avoiding to
call Fowler by his first name and he starts to read his mind ... and then
of course he kills Riner.
Eventually, Marshall and Julia find a way to deal with Fowler by luring
him into a dark cave ... and the darkness just kills Fowler, or rather the
mutant he has become.
A so-so episode of the series, and since the series is Outer
Limits, so-so is pretty good. For the most part, the script is
actually rather intelligent, it only loses steam when the silly
hypnosis-plot is first brought up, then leads to naught when the finale
turns out to be a tired chase and the solution seems to be pulled out of a
hat rather than built up to.
As I said, so-so, but good considering the series is Outer Limits.
