Roy and Agnes Benjamin (Macdonald Carey, Marion Ross) were thrilled
when their son Kenny (Flip Mark) was enrolled in a gouvernment program for
gifted children, and they are even more so when the gouvernment sends over
a private tutor, Mr Zeno (Richard Ney) ... but soon enough, that Mr Zeno
seems to occupy more and more of the boy's time, and the things he teaches
Kenny seem to be weird (like advanced chemistry that involves several
elements not even discovered yet) or even out of this world (like walking
through solid walls - really) - and eventually, the boy seems to have
fallen under Mr Zeno's hypnotic spell.
But when Roy wants to enquire about Mr Zeno at the gouvernment agency,
he finds out they never send out any tutors at all - so Roy
concludes that Mr Zeno definitely has to be from outer space ... what
makes him think that of all things is beyond my comprehension, but Roy
turns out to be right, Mr Zeno is indeed an alien that prepares an alien
invasion using the earth's most gifted boys ...
In the finale, Roy wants to go one on one with Mr Zeno, but Mr Zeno
uses his hypnotic powers to persuade him to commit a little suicide by
jumping out of a window ... and he would have succeeded too wasn't it for
little Kenny, who has seen through the disguise of his tutor long ago but
played along to find out what the evil Commie ... er, alien, really wants,
and now he has found out he turns some dials on the alien's secret
breathing apparatus and makes Mr Zeno suffocate.
The message of this story: as long as America has smart boys just like
young Kenny we won't be overrun by the Communists ... er, aliens (shit it
happened again).
Outer Limits at its worst: Very crude and only feebly
disguised anti-Communist propaganda, using an incredibly silly plot to
bring its message across. The whole episode would be only half as bad if
it were funny - intentionally or unintentionally, I don't really care -,
but like this it's just a primitive and forgettable piece of science
fiction - and in this sense: Forget it !!!
