Josh (Will Ehren) and Rachel (Violet Vile) have been best friends since
childhood, and now fifteen and attending the same high school, they are
still on the phone with one another every day. Thing is, now that they
are fifteen, Rachel sees more in Josh than just her best friend
forever, she has genuinely fallen in love with him, but somehow or other
he blocks off all her advances, as if he didn't even notice she was a girl
despite everyone else in school believing them to be an actual couple -
which frustrates her so much that she eventually corners him and confesses
her freeling to him - to which his answer is that he's in fact gay. This
shatters her understandably, but what's worse, school bully and gossip
blogger Viper (Michael Flynn) has taped their conversation and threatens
to release it on his blog. This gets Josh into a panic, as as the school's
most popular guy and captain of the football team, he can't afford to be
gay, and now he tries to convince Rachel that he's not actually gay and
wants to be her boyfriend - and she's more than willing (and in fact quite
eager) to let him prove it by making out with her in public during recess
- a great üöam om theory, only when it comes to put it into action, Josh
chickens out and it dawns upon her that he's actually gay ... and yet
she's willing to keep his secret. But there's still Viper to consider, and
is it even in Josh's best interest to hide his sexuality? Now to
properly understand the nature of this movie, one has to know this is
actually a musical - and the tunes are mostly catchy and eclectic in
style, and the young cast is up for the task, singing-wise. More
importantly though, writer/director Ivy Vale knows where to place them,
for sometimes dramatic but more often ironic effect. And irony is
essential here, as while the film certainly has its heart in the right
place, its story feels well-worn and indeed formulaic - if it wasn't for
the cast at all the right moments breaking out in song and dance, adding
comedic hyperbole to the drama, making this a really fun yet heart-felt
watch.
