Luxury - Lee Bozeman, vocals (also guitar in the early days), Jamey
Bozeman, guitar, Chris Foley, bass, Glenn Black, drums, and Matt Hinton,
guitar (later years) - started out as The Shroud in the early 1990s,
playing a mix of punk rock and very melodic, even beautiful vocals, a mix
that back then was pretty much unheard of, and that frontman Lee was
conservatively "well-dressed" only added to their slightly
other-worldly image. But their shows sure had a wild atmosphere to them.
That they played mainly in "Christian rock" cycles had more to
do with their origins/surroundings, as they came from Toccoa, a smalltown
in Georgia, USA, than their actual convictions, as their lyrics touched on
edgy subjects, often in a metaphorical way, but didn't have any Christian
undercurrents. Still they got signed by then fairly young Christian rock
label Tooth and Nail Records, who were out to corner the
alternative Christian rock market - so that Luxury didn't fit Christian
rock traditions made them a perfect fit. But while they were out touring
to promote their first album Amazing and Thankyou, they got into a
big car crash that left most of the band hospitalized, and unsurprisingly
the band took a one year hiatus. Their second release The Latest &
The Greatest, again released by Tooth and Nail, received less
support from the label than the earlier record, mainly because the label
had since found its footing with a roster of talent Luxury didn't really
fit in with. So Luxury moved on to another record label, but the big
breakthrough remained elusive as for one life intervened, driving the
bandmembers geographically apart for professional reasons, for the other
they found the Christian rock label hard to shake. To this day, they still
record and still insist on not playing Christian rock, even if no less
than three of the five bandmembers - Chris Foley, Lee and Jamey Bozeman -
have since become Orthodox priests ... Now even if you've never
heard of Luxury the band (and I sure haven't), this is an extremely
interesting and informative documentary, not only because the band's story
has just the right amount of drama and bizarre plottwists to make it a
good story in itself, but also because it shines a very revealing light on
the music industry and especially the Christian rock corner of things (a
subgenre pretty much unknown outside of North America), and it does so in
a very entertaining way, too. And as for Luxury's music, judging from
what's heard in this movie, they sure are worth a listen.
