August's sister Christina has died, and now he has to take care of her
five-year-old daughter Mia ... thing is, August is a former priest, while
Christina was a pornstar, and her profession obviously left marks on her
daughter - quite apart from the fact that Mia has obviously been abused. August
immediately suspects Charlie - Christina's boyfriend who introduced her
into the porn world and who is very possibly Mia's father - quite despite
the fact that Mia seems to be incredibly fond of Charlie and would prefer
to live with him. So August decides to go on an one-man-cruzade against
Charlie and his porn empire, shooting and killing his way through
Charlie's office building until he himself becomes a fugitive from the
law. Then he decides to go against Charlie himself, and in a fit of poor
judgement, he hides a timebomb in Mia's favoutire teddybear and lets her
run off with it, into Charlie's mansion and ... boom, August dies, Mia
dies, everyone in the building dies - but Charlie survives since he hasn't
even been home. Obviously inspired by Paul Schrader's Hardcore
and Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (based on a script by Schrader,
incidently), Princess owes more to the superficiality of the former
than the inherent quality of the later film. In fact, increedibly much of
Princess' plot is not really thought through - especially the finale with
the timebomb hidden in the girl's teddy bear - or left unexplored - like
August's own involvement in making his sister a pornstar, which is only
hinted at, or his past as a priest. And to just demonize pornographers as
child abusers seems to be rather problematic to me and a bit of an
over-simplification - and it's somewhat ironic too, bearing in mind that
production company Zentropa itself runs a porn division ...
