Bret Fitzpatrick (Joe Ciminera) is a well-to-do real estate investor
whose success is too a large part based on his ruthlessness and his
self-righteousness. But not caring for others means he also keeps his own
issues bottled up, like the fact that he has never come over the fact that
his mother has left their home to his drug addict brother Scott (Francisco
Huergo) and not him, like that he has lost his wife and child under
circumstances that might be partially blamed on him, like that he has been
on medication for most his life. Then something weird happens: Bret
starts seeing things, ghosts most probably, that seem to be there to tell
him something. Also, every time Bret touches someone he learns his or her
darkest secrets, in a way that's painful to him. Also, Bret's brother ...
he claims he's dead, even if they are having a good conversation - and
Bret is eventually made to believe him. And now, devoid of his car and his
cellphone - the things that were his strongest links to the "real
world" - Bret tries to figure out what's going on ... only to uncover
a truth much darker than anything he would have ever imagined ... Purification
is one creepy film that works quite so well because it doesn't try to
explain itself away but instead more often than not follows the logic of a
nightmare and relies more on atmosphere than what I'd label hard facts.
Add to this a very moody directorial effort, an unhurried pace that fits
the story, and a solid cast ... and you have yourself a pretty good film!
