It was really a perfect dinner at Harold's (Frank O'Donnell) - until
Harold mentions Maggie's (Audrey Noone) Irish heritage, confronting her
with one bad Irish stereotype after the next. When someone tries to defuse
the situation by mentioning that the food's great, things get even worse,
as the food is Chinese and Laura (Mai Delapa) just happens to have Asian
roots (though she was born in Wisconsin) and is supposed to know
everything about it. Worse yet, Marcel (Will Bouvier) is French, so he's
supposed to be a chef (which he isn't) ... and in five minutes, the guests
of this perfect dinner are leaving without dessert, leaving behind Harold
and his wife, who's now having a word with him - but the word's not what
you might expect ... The Race Card is quite simply tons
of fun, taking a truly cringeworthy situation and making the most of it
without ever becoming crude or hurtful, and the punchline of the thing is
truly hilarious. Add to this a great ensemble cast and elegant direction
and camerawork and you've got yourself a pretty good comedy.
