For a college credit, pretty Kennedy (Cree Kelly), her tutor/boyfriend Ethan (Bryan Brewer), her goth roommate Jade (Allie Rivera) and horny nerd Noah (Thatcher Robinson) take a drive to the middle of nowhere on equinox to investigate the urban legend of "The Rake" (Alan Maxson), a gargoyle-like creature who only comes out at this date to ... well, to kill. Jade's teen runaway sister Kelly (Marisa Davila) has somehow hitched their ride, traveling as a stowaway in the trunk ... and she becomes the Rake's first victim, because totally against everyone's expectations the creature's real for sure. The others manage to make a hasty escape at least and eventually come upon the brightly lit home of loner James (Marshal Hilton), the only human who even dares to live in Rake country as he knows if nothing else the creatures are afraid of light - hence the bright lights everywhere. Grudgingly he gives the strangers, who he had previously warned to not go camping in the region, abode, and apart from Jade having a trauma regarding her sister's death, everyone seems fine, and safe till the next morning. But then the power goes, and with it the lights, and that's a chance the Rake certainly won't let pass ...

Now I won't lie to you, The Raking certainly isn't the reinvention of the wheel, it's basically a slasher movie/creature feature, with most of the expected genre elements firmly intact. But that doesn't say the film isn't scary as hell, features jump scares and genuine and even inventive gruesomeness in all the right spots, and does feature some nice surprises and surprising plottwists despite its formulaic narratives. And that the creature's really creepy while the characters are all like- or at least relatable and played by a competent cast also help make this rather cool genre entertainment!
