Private detective Jeff Randall (Bob Mortimer), & Jeannie (Emilia Fox), the
fiancée of his deceased partner Marty Hopkirk (Vic Reeves) & also his
secret love, are called to Strait Isle, one of the autonomous Canal-islands to
investigate the death of computer expert Curtis (Daniel Crowder), whgo has
worked at the local brewery, & he was gay - a strict no-no for islanders.
At first though, Jeff & Jeannie's investigations lead to very little, as
the islanders are typically conspicious of the mainlanders, and their
interviews with both the local chief of police Woodhuish (Paul Young) &
brewery manager Fishacre (John Sessions) provide them with only a vague clue wo
the island bigshot Pommeroy (George Baker'), who not only owns the island and
the brewery, but by law also acts as the island's coroner.
But on the outside, Pommeroy seems to be a perfectly nice gentleman, caring
about pollution, overpopulation & the well-being of the isle ... until
Marty Hopkirk (who despite being dead is still around - as a spirit only Jeff
can see), finds a secret science lab in which a strange chemical is added to
the local beer - which is soon to be exported internationally. However, Marty
fails to find out what the chemical is for ... & when Jeff confronts
Pommeroy with this newly won but vague information, he & Jeannie are
promptly thrown into prison.
But even in prison the 2 of them have to realize people on the isle start
behaving rather odd all of a sudden, it seems they are all turning ... gay
(!?). With Marty's help however Jeff & Jeannie can escape prison, &
despite the fact that Pommeroy's thugs are already after them enter his secret
lab & confront him with what they found out: That the chemical Pommeroy has
been adding to the beer was some genetic drug that would slowly turn men into
women, in order to deal with overpopulation - & since the beer is going to
be shipped worldwide, it might eve n have been a success. But in the end, the
tables are turned on him when Marty, via a hypersonic sound that can break
glass, breaks the vessel right above Pommeroy that holds the chemical, spilling
it all onto him, having him turned into a woman in fast forward mode before
falling to dust ... A delightfully absurd sci-fi-horror episode that
profits from the autter silliness of its story as well as from the moody &
brooding island-settings (with nods to The Wicker Man, which is even
mentioned in this episode).
