Charles' (Horst tappert) gang of crooks have robbed a money transport
of the treasury worth millions, and the only clue the FBI have is Tommy
Wheeler (Christian Doermer), the chemist who produced the gas the crooks
were using ... but the thing is, Wheeler was killed by his accomplices the
day before the transport was robbed. So all the FBI have to go on now is
Wheeler's girlfriend Violet (Yvonne Monlaur), a barsinger who knows next
to nothing about the crime ... but still enough it seems for Charles to
have her kidnapped, if only to set up a trap for top G-man Jerry Cotton
(George Nader), who is way too clever to fall into the gangsters' trap
though - at least at first - and instead is provided with excellent clues
to track Charles and his gang down. It's only eventually when he has
caught up with the crooks that they manage to capture him, but by then
Charles has to realize he has been outsmarted by a rival crook, Stanley
(Rainer Brandt), who has teamed up with the treasury's head controller
Davis (Ullrich Haupt), which results in Charles being shot, his gang being
captured by the police, and Stanley and Davis getting away with the loot
in a helicopter - with Jerry hanging onto the helicopter and eventually
putting it out of action and putting the crooks behind bars ...
As a crime drama as such, Die Rechnung - eiskalt serviert might
be less than perfect, too many plottwists are too unbelievable, too many
situations are just ridiculous, and especially by today's standards,
machoman Jerry Cotton seems sadly dated ... that all said though, if you
take the film as a mindless actioner and can forgive occasional
incongruencies and the overuse of backprojection to make the film look as
if it was filmed in New York, you might be able to enjoy this film, with
especially the finale (with Jerry hanging down a helicopter) being very
well staged. so it might not be a perfect crime thriller, but it's good
entertainment nevertheless.
