Another of the Cloud Ten films which borderline between faith-inspired
Christianity and decent horror. The film can be either or both, depending on
how it is approached. Me, not caring much for Jesus or the church, I saw it as
a horror film and loved it.
In this follow-up to Apcalypse, Nick Mancuso's evil
Antichrist has assumed
total power and has now started manipulating the public so they embrace him as
a god rather than as a charismatic leader. As a counterfeit Christ, he is able
to heal the blind and work assorted miracles for those who choose to believe
in him, take his mark and see him as savior. Many people are suckered by his
bullshit, just like many were suckered into voting for George W.Bush for a
second term in the USA, only to come to regret the decision afterward.
Of course there are a few people who have their faith tried, only to reject
the Antichrist and find Jesus at the end, while Helen Hannah, played by Leigh
Lewis, continues to rise in the background as one of the evildoer's key
opponents. Some realize in time, others realize too late, they have been
batting for the wrong team in taking Mancuso's side. The behind-the-curtain
message? If you are unconvinced or unsaved, you better find Jesus quick, lest
this happen to you. For the still heart-hardened or scoffing, well, it is
still a good horror movie with an outstanding mastervillain to dote on.
Reportedly, Van Heerden and Mancuso discussed at length what attributes should
be given to the character of Franco Macalousso, the prevailing Sntichrist.
This teamwork resulted in a unique character who is all things to all men, in
order to deceive the population into believing him to be God in the flesh. If
you need a Hitler-like authority figure to threaten you with salvation or
death, he can be that. If you need a guru or healer, he can fix you right up
too. If you need a leader to follow, then just step in line and let him lead
the way. In this and subsequent roles as the greatest evil the world will
supposedly ever know, he wears many faces, changing tactics and appearance
(hairdo, shave, glasses, etc) with each movie. A master of deception and a
powerful role for this actor, though I do not think I was supposed to cheer
for him.
In a lot of these faith-based -films you end up watching nothing but a flimsy
plot or a sermon. In this movie, the characters are all unique, believable,
strong in the right places, weak in others where they should be and help keep
the viewer glued to the screen. It is no Sunday Mass, but rather a
rollercoaster ride with a lot of tense moments, plot twists, doublecrosses and
chills.
