8-year-old Dougie (Alexander Brickel) is miffed, because his teen
sister Jenna (Katheryn Winnick) has brought her boyfriend Alex (Stephen
Graham) home for Halloween. So he walks the streets on his own and
eventually meets a guy in a Satan outfit (Joshua Annex) who looks just
like the Satan from his favourite videogame, Satan's Little Helper,
and because he loves that game quite so much and because this Satan does
some killing just like in the game (and in broad daylight too, which goes
completely unnoticed since everybody thinks he is decorating his porch for
Halloween), Dougie hooks up with him.
First Dougie lets Satan take care of Alex, who gets beaten up pretty
badly in a dark street and left to die, then Dougie and Satan roam the
town a little, with Satan doing quite a bit of killing and Dougie not
realizing it's for real, then Dougie brings Satan home and has his sister
and his mother (Amanda Plummer) believe it's still Alex under that
costume. At first Jenna is even impressed by her boyfriend's sudden
roughness, but eventually the whole thing takes a turn to the psychotic.
Then Dougie's and Jenna's dad (Wass M.Stevens) comes home, and jsut as
a joke, Dougie orders Satan to murder him ... which Satan promptly does,
and then everyone notices the joke is over - even Dougie.
Soon, Satan tapes up mum but good and takes her to a Halloween party,
were everyone thinks it's just a good costume, and where Satan has no
problems poisoning people by the dozen ... and soon Jenna and Alex, who
hasn't died but come to his senses again, decide to go after Satan - not
being able to notify the police, since Satan has since eradicated the
entire police force. Satan though is always one step ahead of the
yongsters, first leaving the party with its dying guests with ease, then
convincing Alex that he is inded his hated father (Dan Ziskie) - he isn't,
he has killed Alex' father some time ago -, then he appears to Dougie in a
Jesus costume, and young Dougie seemingly has learned nothing from his
encounter with Satan (as Satan) and trusts Jesus completely. Somehow too,
Satan first makes Alex shoot his (already dead, but Alex doesn't know
that) father in the Satan costume, then he has Jenna shoot Alex in the
Jesus costume. And in the end, when the police from the next village
finally arrives, he has no problems dressing up as a police officer and
enter Dougie's and Jenna's home without arising suspicion ...
As a very macabre satire on Small Town USA, Satan's Little Helper works
quite well, making quite some points about how a man can go on killing in
broad daylight and all that stuff. As a horrorfilm though, Satan's
Little Helper is rather at a loss: Suspense scenes are few and far
between, not even an attempt at atmospheric filmmaking is made, and
direction and camerawork can be described as uninventive at best. And then
there's this 8-year-old kid that's just too stupid for even an 8-year-old
kid in a horrorflick.
Still, the film provides some fun, and the idea to feature a killer in
a cheap Halloween mask rather than some (clichéd) horror make up might
not be new but is certainly refreshing ...
