Belle (Billie Piper) - who talks directly to the camera during much of
this show - is an upmarket hooker, and she prides herself to be good at
it, too. She doesn't do it out of necessity, or to finance a drug habit or
anything, she just ikes sex, that's all. But that said, she could never
admit what she's doing to her friends or family, to them she's just
Hannah, a secretary at some lawfirm or other - something so dead boring
nobody would want to get into a conversation about it. As Hannah, Belle
can be seen fooling around with her best mate Ben (Iddo Goldberg) during the
day, and the two are behaving just
like siblings would. Plus, Ben is keeping her grounded ... One day, Belle meets Daniel (Tom Mison), a
young and attractive first-time customer ... who's totally intimidated by
her professional behaviour, her posh outfit and makeup and the like - and
who can't get it up. Now that's a first for her, so Belle asks her boss
Stephanie (Cherie Lunghi) to give her another chance with him when he
comes back - basically to satisfy her professional pride. This time she
has figured he doesn't want the smart and fancy woman she always pretends
to be but the girl-next-door ... and when she's just herself with him,
they have the best sex ever. But Belle gets so lost in being herself that
she even tells Daniel her real name, which is her wake-up call, as she's
sworn to herself never to mix business with personal life. And now Belle
decides to never meet Daniel again, because he doesn't want her as Belle
but as Hannah - and she rather wants customers with whom she doesn't have
to be herself at all ... like the guy (Tom Mannion) who wants to be
treated like a horse ...
Based on the weblogs of a true
upmarket prostitute, Secret Diary of a Call Girl is a rather
enjoyable and tastefully sleazy little show, with Billie Piper - running
around in lingerie mostly - making a likeable lead who easily carries the
show, and episodes just short enough (approximately 25 minutes) to not
outstay their welcome by adding soap opera style human drama. Plus, the
whole show has a slightly ironic edge to it, which also helps in bringing
its point across rather unpretentiously. That said, Secret Diary of
a Call Girl is probably not the best thing to ever happen on
television, but totally enjoyable still.
