A fisherman (Joseph Rye) finds a Selkie skin, takes it home and locks
it in a trunk. That night, a naked woman (Emily Booth), actually the
Selkie in human form, shows up on his doorstep and requests her skin back
- but according to ancient laws, she actually belongs to him now, and the
fisherman makes her do all work around the house and also makes her his
slave in bed. Of course she makes attempts to escape, but she's nothing
without her skin, and the fisherman guards the key to the trunk that holds
the skin with his life - which only makes the Selkie all the more
desparate, until ... Inspired by a Celtic myth, this movie
bases its story in more modern times, but still takes great care in giving
its story an unapologetically fairy tale touch - a dark fairy tale for
adults that is. And it's really an intentionally old-fashioned direction
with an emphasis on atmosphere that brings the film to life, while a very
solid small cast carry the thing rather beautifully, making this a rather
compelling piece of fantasy.
