Driving home from a party, Jane (Natthaweeranuch Thongmee) & photographer Tun (Ananda Everingham) run over a woman, but panicking of what they might have done or might get into they drive away ... & it seems that's that, as it seems there are never any inquiries made ...

But then, when photographing a graduation, Tun finds that several of his photos feature weird shadows, that basically ruin the pictures & that in some cases look a lot like ghosts ... and soon the ghost of the women they ran over appears to both of them, in their dreams as well as in real life ...

So, Tun & Jane take up investigations about the deqd girl ... investigations that lead to nothing as they can't find a single report about a dead or even injured girl in the night of the accident. So they concentrate on the clues that might be in the ghost-photos ... & then everything takes an unexpected turn: All the clues suggest that the girl of the accident was an ex-girlfriend of Tun, Natre (Acita Sikamana), whom he ditched years ago, who had suicidal tendencies & whom his friends - with whom he & Jane were partying the night of the accident - took care of rather cruelly (but Tun claims he has no idea what that was supposed to mean). Inexplicably, all of his friends have committed suicide since the party.

Tun & Jane decide to visit Natre's mother, just to get to the root of the story ... but there they learn, to their greatest surprise, that Natre's still alive ... which is not true, as they have to find out, her mother only kept her corpse in the house, not being able to let go. But it also turns out that Natre didn't die in a car accident - their car accident - at all, but committed suicide by jumping out of a window, quite some time earlier.

Jane figures that to atone for his sins towards Natre it would suffice if Tun would persuade her mother to properly cremate her corpse ... which he does, & after one more night of haunting everything seems to be over ...

But then Jane, developing some more photos for Tun, discovers a photoseries that seems to tell her to look behind some shelves in Tun's appartment ... where she finds photos of Tun's friends raping Natre, obviously taken by Tun ... apparetnly their way of taking care of the girl.

Naturally, & despite Tun's lame excuses, Jane leaves him, so he decides to face Natre the spirit once & for all, looking for clues of her with his Polaroid camera, but he can't find her until he takes a picture of himself ... & finds her sitting on his shoulders ... which obviously did acause his terrible neck pains he had all through the film.

Trying to get rid of her, he falls out of a window ... but not to his death, he becomes a mental patient, with Natre sitting on his shoulders for all eternity ...

Really creepy thriller that puts an atmosphere of unease over scary effects, & coherent storytelling over mindless action, & even if the story sometimes seems to lose itself in its own complexity, Shutter is a competently made, genuinely creepy piece of horror cinema.
