A horse by the name Silver Blaze, champion at the local races, has gone
missing, and its trainer (Richard Beale) has been found murdered - which
is enough to get Sherlock Holmes' (Christopher Plummer) interested,
especially since the police has already found a tailor-made suspect
(Donald Burton), too tailor-made for Holmes' taste. In no time at all,
Holmes has tracked down the horse to a neighbour's stable, has proven that
despite a legion of suspects, it was the horse itself that killed its
trainer, who tried to injure it that he could make lots of money betting
against it at the race, and Holmes even sees to it that Silver Blaze wins
the race. Thorley Walters plays Doctor Watson, by the way. Very
traditional Sherlock Holmes adaptation that at approximately
25 minutes runs a tad too short to really create much tension or suspense,
which is why some of the more original plottwists of the story fail to
really surprise - that said though, a horse as murderer fails to really
convince to begin with. At least Christopher Plummer is a good Sherlock
Holmes though.
