It should have been a memorable night, with Mary-Jane (Catherine Bérubé)
throwing an engagement party for her best friend Alice (Kimberly-Sue
Murray) and Alice's boyfriend Peter (Bineyam Girma), but it ended in a big
row between Alice's drunk boyfriend Fred (Olivier Renaud) and everybody
else, which led to Peter trying to drive home in a condition he shouldn't
have resulting in a giant crash with multiple vehicles and several
fatalities. Since then, Mary-Jane is somewhat understandably plagued by
guilt, not made any better by the fact that Alice blames her for
everything and neither she nor Peter will talk to her any longer. What
makes matters worse is that Fred, whom she has dumped in the aftermath of
the accident, refuses to accept their break-up and his behaviour borders
the abusive more and more. Mary-Jane wants to leave town, but something
seems to keep her back. What's worse though, her reality starts breaking
up, her reasoning experiences leaps - and something's definitely not right
with her ... One thing up front, Snow Angel steers
towards a surprise ending - that's actually pretty easy to guess from
early on in the film, at least if you're into film's of this ilk. That
said, it goes to the film's credit that it doesn't rely purely on its
final twist but does tell an engaging and relatable story about griefing
and coping getting to it, a story that's thought-through and
well-constructed. And add to that a suitably atmospheric direction and a
solid ensemble cast led by a strong Catherine Bérubé, and you've got
yourself a pretty cool piece of genre cinema.
