Investigative reporter Nora Thompson (Nicole Cinaglia) has just
revealed the wrongdoings of corrupt politician Ron Morrison, so much so
that he has committed suicide in his prison cell, but that triggered his
daughter Carolyn (Vienna Hayden) to kidnap Nora and take her out to some
remote woods to mercilessly torture her - not so much as revenge for her
father, whom she has always considered a son of a bitch, but as payback
for her deriving her of her inheritance. Thing is, once they're deep
enough in the woods, they realize they're not exactly alone - and it's not
just Deputy Meyers who has been on their trail and now engaes Carolyn in a
shoot-out, it's also a creature (Kevin Keppy) that eventually brutally
kills the deputy, then goes after the women - and eventually catches up
with Carolyn and the two engage in a brutal fight. Nora manages to get
away and make it to a nearby presently unoccupied cabin where she plans to
hole herself in until help arrives. Not too bad an idea it seems, as while
there's no food there's at least water and firewood to keep her hydrated
and warm. Eventually, Carolyn shows up at Nora's doorstep, badly mangled,
unarmed, and basically a shadow of herself - and out of compassion Nora
lets her in, as in her condition Carolyn can't be a threat anymore, and
basically the two are in the same boat, and relying on one another they
might just make it out alive. Sure, Carolyn is in a pitiful physical
condition, but she's an experienced hunter and might have just the
knowledge Nora lacks for survival in the wild. And she indeed does save
Nora's life when she's attacked by the creature. But once they try to make
it through the woods to Carolyn's car, things get crazier than they are as
Carolyn starts to show some very unusual tendencies that have nothing to
do with payback anymore ... A very nice piece of survival
horror with a premise that might be a bit on the silly side, but that's
easily made up by a swift pace with many setpieces and suspense aplenty,
and two female leads more than able to bring across their characters and
carry the film. And a genre savvy directorial effort that makes the most
out of the film's outdoor locations and that doesn't shy away from
occasional outbursts of violence without overdoing things really helps
making this one cool genre effort.
