In a café, freelance journalist Daisy (Jessica Stevenson) & wannabe
comicbook artist Tim (Simon Pegg) coincidently share a table & have to
realize they are both looking for an appartment - she because she can't stand
the people she shares a flat with any longer, he because his ex just broke his
heart - and keeps their appartment after breaking up. But the only appartment
in the whole town that seems to be acceptable is exclusively for couples ... so
Daisy & Tim decide to pose as a couple to get the appartment ... & as a
consequence move in together.
However when they meet their neighbour, insane concept artist Brian (Mark
Heap) & their eccentric landlady Marsha (Julia Deakin) they realize they
might have taken a bigger bite than they are able to chew on ...
On first sight, this synopsis might sound reminiscent of Will and
Grace, however the idea of contrasting people moving in together out of
necessity has long before Will & Grace been a comedy staple -
one such comedy, Green Card, is actually made an allusion to in this
episode. What sets Spaced a little bit apart from the cliché is
that their contrasts are not forced upon the main characters (like
"oh look, he's a yuppie, so she has to be a hippie"), instead their similarities in their struggle with the outer
world (i.e. neighbours, landladies) are portrayed.
