Earth is under attack by Lord Keth of Kobor, who has bought the planet
at an intergalactic auction and now wants to enslave humanity. The humans
of course seem helpless against the technically superior aliens, whose
spaceships are made of the pretty much impenetrable metal Indirium - but
Commander Barr (Franco Ressel), chef of Earth's defense forces, has an
idea: Why not ask the mentally superior but extremely eccentric professor
Morrey for help, who is not only immensely clever but who has also some
sort of ESP powers. Morrey agrees to help, but he insists on forming his
own team, which includes Shawn (Chris Avram) and Bridget (Malisa Longo),
two brilliant but criminal scientists, who have to be broken out of jail
first, Dirk (Gianni Garko), a gambler with hypnotic powers, Norman
(Roberto Dell-Acqua), a boxer/wrestler who defeats robots in prize-fights,
Hollywood, a soldier who insists on doing everything strictly by the book
(but is hypnotically persuaded to do otherwise every now and
again), Morrey's own daughter Irene (Yanti Somer), who is also Hollywood's
fiancée and Dirk's ex, and two very annoying lovesick androids. Lord
Keth soon notices there is a being with mental powers rivaling his own -
Professor Morrey of course - on earth, and now he does everything to get
his hands on the professor, he even kidnaps and branwashes his daughter at
one point, but in the end, Shawn and Bridget and the two androids find the
means to beat Indirium - dubbed anti-Indirium -, and then they all hop
into their little spaceships and go one on one with the alien ships ...
and since the alien ships are too fast for them, the Professor uses his
ESP powers to slow them down. In the course of the battle, Hollywood and
Norman are allowed to die heroes' deaths, Dirk gets back together with
Irene after he frees her from the aliens, Lord Keth's army is destroyed,
and the alien villain is forced to sell earth again at the next auction -
but by now, Shawn and Bridget have thrown in with him, to get their fair
share of the deal ... Oh my God, what a bomb. Obviously made to
cash in on the (then current) first Star Wars films, Star
Odyssey is a cheaply and hastily produced space opera that fails to
convince on pretty much every level: The space battles look pathetic for
even the film's small budget and about 20 years behind their time, the
androids in the film seem to be inspired by children's drawings rather
than anything else, the aliens in their Doris Day wigs are pathetic (Lord
Keth himself admittedly looks pretty nice though), the light sabre fights
are embarrassing and seem to be out of place in this film, the characters
hardly ever rise above cardboard level, the futuristic costumes are
ridiculous for the most part, and the actors don't seem to be even trying
to bring their characters to life. And need I even mention the script is
stupid, the dialogues are bland and the direction is uninspired? So yes,
Star Odyssey is a bad film, but trash film fans might find
something worthwhile in it anyhow - if only something to laugh at though
... Obviously made back-to-back with War
of the Robots, sharing much of the cast, costumes and sets with
that movie.
