Captain Kirk and several crewmembers of the starship Enterprise are
beamed to a weird planet against their will, where they find, rather
unexpectedly, a midieval castle, inhabited by lonesome Squire Trelane
(William Campbell), who claims to be a student of earth's history - even
if he seems to have gotten several facts wrong. Soon though it turns out
that the Squire's a madman, his castle just a conjuring trick with several
flaws - and his intentions are to play cruel games with Kirk and his
Somehow, Kirk convinces Trelane to beam the others back on board the
Enterprise while he himself will be the prey in a little manhunt he puts
up for Trelane. However, the longer the manhunt goes on the more
over-the-top Trelane goes until Kirk loses his cool, breaks Trelane's
sword in two and slaps him like a little boy ... when it turns out that
Trelane really is a little, slightly cruel boy, but one with seemingly
unlimited powers - until his parents arrive that is who immediately ground
him, apologize to Kirk for their son's behaviour, and naturally let the
Enterprise go ...
High on camp, this episode is not all too well written and rather low
on actual tension and suspense. Sure there are laughs in this one (some of
them even intended), but it definitely falls short of great and isn't even
among the campiest (and thus funniest) episodes ...
