The subway as such is a place where all sorts of life meet, the rich and
the poor, the righteous and the dishonest, religous zealots and sinners,
but also couples who have just been married and other couples destined to
break up, men racing to their wives giving birth, yoga instructors and
prostitutes. Now imagine, one such subway train got stuck in one of the
tunnles of the NYC subway system, without means of communication to the
outside world- And imagine they're locked into their wagon for over 40
hours, and alcohol and guns would come into play. Now that's when the mask
of civilisation starts to crumble and humankind's animalistic instincts
boil to the top ...
Now this movie was filmed with no worded out scripts, just a basic
storyline, and character outlines were given out to the actors, and they
had relative freedom to act on those. Now is this a recipe for disaster?
Yes, for sure, as ever so often in this film the actors talk over one
another, start to mumble, or even don't keep in shot as well as they
should. That said, the actors are all really good, play colourful (if not
always multi-faceted) characters, and work well together as an ensemble.
And the whole chaos this way of filmmaking creates just adds to the
grittiness the premise already suggests, making this one maybe not the
super-perfect film but an unusual yet worthwhile thriller nevertheless.
