A guy and a girl meet for a romantic picnic ... but it seems the
endeavor is doomed right from the start when they can't decide who's to
carry the picnic basket, the table cloth won't stay in place, the
champagne bottle won't open, when they dance it looks awkward, and
eventually they apparently pass out from too much champagne - but there
still is a happy ending for this ... Stylistically, this movie
was rather obviously inspired by silent comedies from decades ago - not
only because there is no dialogue and on-screen sound, also because of the
actors' mannerisms, the slight overacting to make up for lack of dialogue,
and because of its consciously old-fashioned camerawork. In story however,
the film is more reminiscent of some of Eric Rohmer's best films, as it
tells a very trivial story in a very charming way, sees people clumsily
stumbling through everyday situations without making fun of them, and
leaves the viewer with a good feeling. A rather sweet film, actually.
