Somewhere in the North of England: The Smiths and the Devis are
separated only by a fence ... but couldn't be further apart. Essentially,
the Smiths are poor, with head of the family Mick (Dean Sills) being
unemployed ... and not intending to change that anytime soon (or ever), as
long as the dole money and welfare checks come in. That said, Mick is also
a bit of a git, he's rarely seen without a beer, and takes a cab even to
his favourite pub - which is only across the street as it is. On the
other side of the fence, well-to-do Bev Devi (Johleen Wakefield) is trying
hard to keep up appearances by throwing barbecues for her upper class
friends, totally glossing over the fact that her marriage has long been in
shambles and she's shagging her kids' teacher (Ross Marshall) - and of
course, things come to a head eventually ... Up North
is, above everything else, great fun. Sure, one might argue that some of
the humour is a bit on the crude side, but then again the comedy is never
self-serving but always moves the story forward or at least helps develop
the show's characters - and that's the next point about the show, the
characters are all likeable or interesting at least and manage to be more
than just the caricatures above synopsis might suggest. In all, a pilot
that definitely makes you want to see more! And if this has at
all whetted your appetite, feel free to just click here: https://www.essex-tv.co.uk/up-north/
